Mart Postma, chairman of the Accountability Council (VO) sees increasing pressure on pension funds to include social objectives in the pursued investment policy. According to him, public opinion, what the members think, what the regulators expect is not static, but constantly changing.

“Let me start by briefly introducing myself. My name is Mart Postma (44), I’m married to Jenny with two sons (aged 16 and 11) and live in the beautiful city of The Hague. I have been working at Robeco in various positions since 2005 and have been chairman of the Accountability Body (VO) for about a year and a half.

Staying on course in a dynamic environment
There are many challenges in the pension industry in the Netherlands, but I believe that we should not forget that we can be proud of our Dutch pension system. It has even been rated the best in the world in the annual ‘Global Pension Index’ by consultancy firm Mercer for three years in a row now.

I see increasing pressure from society, but also from regulators, towards pension funds to include social objectives in the pursued investment policy. Pensioenfonds Robeco has formulated a clear policy for socially responsible investment, which can also be found on the pension fund’s website. Public opinion, what the members think, what the regulators expect is not static, but constantly changing. The challenge for Pensioenfonds Robeco is to stay on course in this dynamic environment.

Another challenge is the new pension system. The government aims to make the switch to a new pension system by 1 January 2026 and even earlier if possible. This is a comprehensive and complex dossier, which the board of Pensioenfonds Robeco is tackling energetically and ahead of time.

Accountability Council will fully undertake its role in the preparations for the new pension agreement
The Accountability Council has the task of assessing the actions of the Board of the Pension Fund, giving substantive advice on all kinds of dossiers, while taking all interests into consideration. This is a continuous responsibility of the Accountability Council. In this regard, the Accountability Council will play a major role in the preparations for the new pension agreement.

An important focus area for the Accountability Council is the communication between the pension funds and its members. For example, the communication about responsible investment and the new pension agreement. The Accountability Council is enthusiastic about the summarized annual report 2020 which Pensioenfonds Robeco has recently published on its website. This is where the highlights of the annual report are shared in a very accessible manner. My advice is: check out the website!”
