How often do you get the chance to join a board before you turn thirty? That thought crosses Nick Mutsaers’ mind almost immediately when he’s asked to join Robeco Pension Fund as a trainee board member. The question answers itself. A chance like this comes along once. So the answer is a wholehearted yes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nick, 28, grew up in Tilburg. After secondary school he moved to Rotterdam to study econometrics at Erasmus University, where he completed both his bachelor’s and his master’s. His graduation placement brought him to Robeco. The experience was good on both sides, so he stayed on. He’s now been with us for five years.<\/p>\n

An investment worth making<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The invitation to join the board came completely out of the blue. A colleague who is stepping down from her board role approached him personally. “That felt like a real gesture of trust. And it’s a unique opportunity. How often does anyone get to do something like this before they turn thirty? I want to learn how a board works, what the dynamics are and the kinds of questions a board deals with.”<\/p>\n

He sees it as a lasting investment in himself. “At Robeco you can take a course alongside your work, do a master’s or earn a certificate. I find this more interesting. It takes up a lot of my spare time on top of my job, but to my mind it’s more than worth it.”<\/p>\n

A careful vetting process<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Before Nick can be formally appointed, he has to meet a series of demanding requirements. As a trainee board member he is following an extensive training programme with the Foundation for Pension Education (SPO), which is affiliated with Nyenrode. Subjects such as cybersecurity, sustainability, governance and pension legislation are covered in depth. Nick has been granted exemptions for the parts where his expertise is already proven. “A learning plan is drawn up based on what you already know. Your file then goes to DNB. There may be an interview after that, and then approval can follow. Until then I’m a trainee.”<\/p>\n

That colleague by the coffee machine<\/strong><\/h4>\n

His role on the board ties in with his day-to-day work. Nick is strengthening the investment committee and bringing his financial expertise to it. For now he sees himself mainly as a student. “My personal goal at the moment is to absorb as much as I can. To experience how it works, understand the dynamics and learn from the people around me.”<\/p>\n

His eyes light up at the thought that Robeco Pension Fund is directly connected to the organisation he works for. “I really like that. You’re standing by the coffee machine with a colleague, and you’re doing it for that colleague too.” That human, collegial side fuels his enthusiasm. And as if that weren’t enough, his time on the board coincides with an eventful moment. The move to the new pension system brings extra momentum. “All the more challenging in substance, and all the more relevant to society.”<\/p>\n

Beyond not knowing<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Until a few years ago Nick hardly gave his own pension a thought. He knew contributions were being paid in, of course, but it didn’t really interest him. “Before I was asked to join the board, I didn’t look at my pension portal all that often. Retirement felt so far off, and the forecasts so uncertain, that I sometimes wondered whether it was worth spending much time on.” He sees the same thing among many people his age.<\/p>\n

Young people and the future<\/strong><\/h4>\n

He does think interest in money matters is growing among younger people. Investing in particular has become more popular. ETFs, index funds and investment apps have made financial topics more accessible. At the same time he sees the pull of crypto, where young people are after quick gains rather than building wealth over the long term. Nick raises an interesting thought. “A lot of young people are focused mainly on now. My generation hasn’t been through many major economic setbacks. So we don’t feel any urgency to look decades ahead. Maybe we’ve simply been lucky. If you’ve lived through a crisis yourself and felt the consequences, you might think sooner about your financial security in the future.”<\/p>\n

Travelling towards knowledge and experience<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Does he see a lifelong career in the pension world ahead of him? “I don’t know yet. I really enjoy the work I do now. My day-to-day work isn’t all that closely related to pensions in technical terms. But I do find the governance side fascinating. Say I’m 40 or 50 and I’m sitting on a few boards. Yes, I can picture that.”<\/p>\n

For now, it’s the enthusiasm that stands out. About a unique opportunity. About governance where finance and social responsibility go hand in hand. About the chance to gain board experience before he turns thirty. “I have no idea where this will take me in the end.
